I’ve spent my career translating emerging technologies into lasting competitive advantage.

Every few years, a new technology captures the world’s attention.

Personal computing.

The Internet.

Ecommerce.

Cloud.

Artificial Intelligence.

Not every new technology becomes a technology wave. One of the most important executive skills is distinguishing genuine shifts from temporary distractions.

But recognizing the wave is only the beginning.

Every meaningful technology wave rewrites the rules of competition. Organizations can either redesign themselves around the new rules or continue optimizing for a game that no longer exists.

That’s the work I’ve spent my career doing.

I think of my role as both translator and architect.

As a translator, I help executives understand complex technologies in business terms while earning the trust of engineers by understanding the technology deeply enough to speak their language. Successful transformation happens when everyone understands not just what the technology does, but why it matters and how it changes the future of the business.

As an architect, I design the business capabilities, operating models, products, and organizational structures required to capitalize on a technology wave. The most talented designers and engineers are capable of building extraordinary systems, but without a thoughtful architectural design they’re often building the wrong thing. Architecture determines what gets built. Leadership determines whether an organization has the conviction to build it.

My perspective was shaped by Decision Sciences, an interdisciplinary field that combines computer science, human psychology, and applied mathematics. It taught me something that has guided every chapter of my career: technology alone rarely creates competitive advantage. Lasting advantage comes from redesigning organizations so technology, people, information, and operating models evolve together.

I’ve applied that same playbook throughout my career.

At PriceSCAN, I co-founded one of the Internet’s earliest comparison shopping marketplaces. As the business matured, we recognized that our proprietary pricing data represented an entirely different opportunity. We invented a methodology for constructing retail price indices, filed patent applications around that methodology, and partnered exclusively with Bloomberg to publish our indices through Bloomberg Terminal. The Internet wasn’t simply changing how consumers shopped. It made an entirely new information business possible.

At Deb Shops, ecommerce was reshaping retail. We rebuilt the digital business, modernized the technology platform, brought fulfillment in house, and repositioned the company to compete as the boundaries between physical and digital retail disappeared.

At Rainbow Shops, I’ve spent more than a decade helping the organization navigate cloud commerce, mobile, marketplaces, first-party customer engagement, and now artificial intelligence. We modernized the commerce platform, brought fulfillment and customer service in house, launched native mobile applications, expanded digital marketplaces, built a first-party customer engagement ecosystem serving more than 8 million email subscribers and 3 million SMS subscribers, and integrated AI throughout the business. Each technology wave required more than implementing new software. It required new capabilities, new operating models, and new ways of thinking about the business.

My work with AI has reinforced the same lesson I’ve learned during every previous technology wave. Organizations don’t create value by implementing technology. They create value by reorganizing around what the technology makes possible.

My vision for AI has never been autonomous systems replacing people.

It’s decision support.

For more than fifty years, Decision Sciences envisioned systems that could combine information, analytics, and human judgment to help people make better decisions. The vision arrived decades before the technology. Personal computing, the Internet, mobile, cloud computing, and now AI have each supplied another missing piece.

I don’t see AI as the destination.

I see it as the latest enabling technology in a much longer journey toward helping people make better decisions, build better organizations, and create better outcomes.

Technology waves are inevitable. Competitive advantage isn’t.

The organizations that succeed are the ones that understand what has changed, redesign how they create value, and build the capabilities required to thrive under a new set of rules.

The technologies have changed. The playbook hasn’t.
